Born out of an obsession with retro Peruvian psych cumbia that also resulted in The Roots of Chicha compilation, Chicha Libre marks Brooklyn as the source for yet more wild adventures in global sounds. The band was founded by New York resident Frenchman Olivier Conan who also runs the bar and label Barbès. It’s the only band in the northern hemisphere totally dedicated to Peruvian chicha, a hybrid form of cumbia mixed with psychedelic surf pop which surfaced as the favourite working class dance music of 1970s Lima. Chicha Libre’s singular sound keeps the wild spirit of the original movement intact alongside surprising tributes to Ravel, Dassin, Kingsley and Satie. With a cinematic feel which bounces between Esquivel and Tarantino, the combo mischievously questions our conceptions of time and space. In short, good music here and now.
